Painting Beyond the Brush

Painting with Plasticine: A Creative Skill-Share at The Arts & Letters Club of Toronto

On April 7th and 14th, 2025, the historic painting studio at The Arts & Letters Club of Toronto became a space of playful exploration and artistic experimentation during a two-day workshop I had the pleasure of leading Painting with Plasticine. The workshop gathered fellow Club members, all practicing artists, for an engaging skill-share centered around a medium often associated with childhood, yet rich with creative potential.

We began the workshop with a presentation delving into the history of plasticine, its invention, chemical makeup, and surprising versatility across various disciplines including animation, industrial design, and fine art. We explored its unique properties: malleability, reusability, and bold pigmentation, setting the stage for its reinterpretation as a painting medium.

From theory, we moved to hands-on practice. Participants were introduced to foundational techniques for manipulating and layering plasticine, with a particular focus on how it behaves on unconventional boards and surfaces. Throughout the sessions, I shared practical tips and tricks, gleaned from my own artistic process, designed to help participants push the boundaries of the material.

More than a technical workshop, Painting with Plasticine became an invitation to play. As we sculpted color into form, each participant reconnected with the joy of tactile creation, unlocking a childlike curiosity that reminded us of the importance of spontaneity and wonder in our artistic practices.

Due to enthusiastic interest and creative momentum, the workshop will be extended through the month of May, continuing over four consecutive Mondays.
